Good Eating In Bernalillo, NM
A two hour, very scenic drive on I-40 would bring us to our next destination, Coronado Campground, a city park located in Bernalillo, NM, about 15 miles north of Albuquerque.
We were a little nervous because the weather had been somewhat iffy with the possibility of snow, but fortunately as our departure date neared, the forecast was a little less formidable. We had an occasional sprinkle here and there but no snow until we hit the Albuquerque area. Fortunately it was pretty light so there was no accumulation on the roads.
When we arrived at Coronado Campground around 2:15 pm, it was nice, but a little different than what we expected.
It was right in the midst of a retail area so our scenic view from our dinette window was of the backside of the Bosque North Brewery. How pretty – not! But the views in the other direction were quite nice.
Overall the campground was clean and each site had a colorful cabana over the picnic table, a charcoal grill and a firepit. Decent place. The developed sites (1-6) had water and 50 amp electric for $40 which was much cheaper than the Route 66 RV Resort where we’ve stayed several times before. However, Route 66 RV Resort is right off I-40 and Coronado is 18 miles north on I-25. Coronado is a better choice if you are exploring Albuquerque, or heading to Santa Fe. Route 66 RV is 23 miles west of Albuquerque and I-25, so is a better choice if not exploring Albuquerque.
Big Rigs take note, site #6 is the first site in the row of pull-thrus in regards to how a coach will approach them. A tight, well calculated, 270 degree turn is required to get into site #6 on the first try. Several two foot tall posts further compound the issue. We did make it in our 45′ rig with tow attached, but just barely. The other sites, #5 thru #1 should not be an issue.
On Saturday of our stay, we went to The Range Cafe on Coors for breakfast. It is a local chain with several locations in the Albuquerque area and we had been to this one back in 2017 and really enjoyed it. Since there was a 30 minute wait for a table, we decided to eat at the bar which was very comfortable. I ordered the Huevos Con Queso (2 poached eggs, English muffins, chile con queso, Canadian bacon, pinto beans and range fries $14.99) and Rob ordered Green Chile Chicken Egg-Chilada’s (shredded chicken, green chile, pinto beans, range fries, cotija, green onion $13.99). Both were good although I wasn’t totally happy with mine – too cheesy.
The day before our departure we went to Bosque Brewery North. Funny that the brewery was literally within a stones throw from our campsite, but it was entirely fenced off, so we had to drive out to the main drag, go the wrong way, make a U turn, etc.
I ordered the Beef Birria Taco Plate ($13) which was slow cooked pot roast and Monterey Jack cheese grilled in birria consommé, served with corn, extra consommé and salsa. Rob had the Chicken Poutine Fries ($13.50) which was a heaping mound of French fries topped with green chile cream gravy, cheddar cheese curds and pulled, marinated chicken. Both were excellent. Only complaint I had about mine was that my meal was very messy.
The morning of our departure, there was a beautiful, very colorful sunrise which I could see out my bedroom window. If I weren’t so lazy, I could have taken better pictures.
Speaking of photos, here are a few more of our stay in Bernalillo.
