Another Visit To Fort Pierce
A short drive of forty one miles would bring us to our next stop, Treasure Coast RV Park in Fort Pierce where site 45 would be our home for three nights. We last stayed at Treasure Coast December 2013 so it’s been a minute.
Treasure Coast RV Resort is a commercial campground (as opposed to a federal, county or state campground) which we generally try to avoid due to higher prices ($75/nite in this case) and more often than not, a less desirable environment. However, Treasure Coast is pretty decent with concrete slab sites and adequate spacing (although minimal privacy). Our primary reason for staying here was for the sewer hookup (after our sewerless stay at Sebastian Inlet), so we could dump the tanks and do laundry. Also, for easy proximity to grocery shopping. Plus we had timed the delivery of several USPS and UPS packages to meet us here. We last stayed at Treasure Coast December 2013 so it’s been a minute.
We can go as many as eight days comfortably without a sewer hookup. We have a 60 gallon gray water tank and a 40 gallon black tank. We can probably go two weeks without dumping the black tank, but the gray water accumulates quickly if one is not careful. We have gained some good experience over the years and do practice several effective conservation techniques. Besides taking “Navy Showers”, another major water saver is our “Showermiser” valve which redirects cold water back to the fresh tank until it gets hot – this saves up to one gallon per shower both from being consumed and going down the drain. Another is our Fisher Paykel dishdrawer dishwasher. That device can wash a large load of dinnerware (it’s about half the size of a standard dishwasher) with as little as 1.8 gallons of water going down the drain. That’s less water than running the faucet for only 1 minute! Washing dishes by hand will consume at least ten times more water with inferior results and provide no sanitization. Our high efficiency washing machine can consume up to 15 gallons per load so we don’t do laundry on board without a sewer hookup.
While here, we visited our usual haunts in Fort Pierce including the Fort Pierce Inlet on the barrier island and the City Marina area close to downtown.
The Berry Fresh Cafe is one of our favorite breakfast spots in the area. Note they have five locations in Florida. And the timing of our stay here was perfect as several years ago we both joined the Berry Fresh Club.
With my birthday in November and Rob’s in December, we both had received Buy One Get One Free emails. On this visit, I had the Nova Salmon Benedict ($18.99) which was cold smoked Nova Salmon nestled atop two potato latkes and herbed cream cheese with fried capers, topped with two poached eggs, diced tomatoes, pickled onions drizzled with hollandaise sauce. Yum!
Rob enjoyed the Irish Eggs Benedict ($15.99), toasted English muffins, topped with homemade Corned Beef Hash, two poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Thanks to the birthday promotion, $15.99 was deducted from our bill.
There is a popular farmers market on Saturday mornings. Unfortunately on the Saturday during our stay, the market was extremely crowded and we couldn’t find a parking space.
We also always like to take a ride along South Indian River Drive to enjoy the scenic waterfront. And usually a trip to the Nelson Family Farm Stand to stock up on fresh veggies and citrus.
Unlike Sebastian Inlet, the Fort Pierce Inlet is deep and wide and much more boater friendly. Jetty Park is a nice place to visit and to patronize some of the nearby restaurants and to watch the boat traffic.
There are a few scenic boat tours that run out of the City Marina (see our post Hanging Out in Fort Pierce to read about the one we didn’t enjoy).
There was one other thing Rob wanted to do while we were here, and that was visit the Marine Connection Liquidators warehouse again.
We were hoping to find some Meridian (our boat) specific parts, but it’s just fun exploring too (well, for Rob anyway). This place has a huge 30,000 sq ft indoor warehouse, as well as a massive 10 acres of surplus outside.
It would literally take days to look thru everything here. We only spent about an hour and we didn’t end up buying anything, but sure wish it was closer to RI where we keep our boat in case we needed that obscure part.
Before we knew it, it was time to move to our next destination which surprisingly was once again 41 miles away. Stay tuned to hear about our adventures at our next stop!
